Free Solo follows Alex Honnold, the worlds greatest free solo climber, as he attempts to be the first person to ever free solo the legendary El Capitan in Yosemite national park. It is directed by Jimmy Chin, and has won an absolutely incredible account of awards. For good reason!

For those of you that don’t know, free solo climbing is the act of climbing with absolutely no equipment. Also for those of you that don’t know, the El Cap mountain is nine hundred meters tall from ground to top. Combine those two and it means that if you slip you die. Fun, right?

That right there is the awesomeness of this documentary, the last, I’d say twenty minutes. The rest was fine, it showed Alex living his life and getting use to climbing El Cap. We learn the kind of person he is, that he has difficulty connecting to people, and at one point he gets a brain scan that tells him he’s a thrill seeker (duh!). But, the truly crazy part that kept me thinking about this was the end when he finally climbed. Everything was beautifully shot from terrifying angles that really accented just how high he actually was. My heart raced the entire time as I leaned forward in my seat. It’s an amazing experience for a doc to give you!
